Twelve Birthstones

The birthstones, twelve beautiful stones corresponding to the different months, seem to have a biblical origin. In Exodus 28, Moses instructs to make special clothes for Aaron, the high priest of the Hebrews. It included a breastplate set with 12 jewels representing the 12 pairs of tribes of Israel. The twelve jewels were garnet, amethyst, aquamarine, diamond, emerald, alexandrite, ruby, peridot, gemstone, opal, topaz, and zircon.
These stones did not begin to become associated with the twelve months until around one to five years A.D., and then in the eighteenth century a Polish gem dealer associated each stone with the month of birth. in 1912, the American Gem Society created an official list of birthstones, and despite some changes, the 1912 list is used today.

Twelve birthstones

January's birthstone is garnet, a gemstone group with over 20 varieties that encompasses almost every color. Garnet is associated with eternity, truth and faith, and is believed to protect the traveler.

February's birthstone is amethyst, one of the most precious of quartz gemstones. Amethyst is associated with health, luck and wisdom, and is believed to make the wearer brave.

Aquamarine is the birthstone of those born in March. Blue aquamarine means understanding and happiness and is considered to have healing powers.

Known for its brilliance and exceptional hardness, the diamond is the birthstone of April. Associated with eternity, courage and health, the diamond is a symbol of love.

The most precious and valuable of the green stones is emerald, also the birthstone of May. Like the diamond, emerald is considered a symbol of love and is also associated with goodness and loyalty.

People born in June can choose the pearl, the birthstone about June, or the altered stone. Unique among gemstones because it is organic rather than mineral, pearls are associated with nobility, beauty and peace, and symbolize purity. Named after Tsar Alexander II of Russia, this rare stone is believed to bring good luck and love.

The ruby is the birthstone of July. As one of the four gemstones and the most precious red stone, the ruby's brilliance and rarity make it one of the most sought-after stones. Associated with passion, power and love, rubies are also believed to ward off evil.

The August birthstone is peridot, also associated with strength. One of just a few gemstones occurring in only one color (green), Peridot is also associated with success, peace and luck.

One of the four great gemstones, the sapphire is the birthstone of September, associated with tranquility and truth, and is resistant to evil, especially poison.

October's birthstone is opal. Thanks to its color variations, opal is a hugely popular gemstone associated with wisdom, purity and hope, as well as loyalty and confidence.

Those born in November can choose their birthstone among topaz and citrine. Topaz comes in a variety of colors and is associated with love and affection, as well as sincerity, courage and wisdom. Citrine is associated with success, prosperity, cheerfulness and ease.

Those born in December are faced with a choice of three birthstones. The December birthstones are turquoise, tanzanite and zircon. Zircon is said to be the oldest mineral on earth and can be a colorless/white stone and a few other colors. This sparkling gemstone is associated with wisdom, honor and prosperity. Another December birthstone, opaque gemstone, turquoise is associated with peace and balance, as well as good luck and longevity.
